Personal and background information: Born and raised in Shelbyville, Kentucky; BS and MS in Industrial Education from Eastern Kentucky University; Married with two children, daughter is a graduate of Ball State University and son is a graduate of Louisville Technical Institute. I have two grandchildren. My wife, Delores, and I live in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.
Teaching experience: I taught for 30 years at Elizabethtown High School, Elizabethtown, Kentucky and retired in 1998. I returned to teaching in 2000 to help out due to the shortage of Technology Education teachers. I taught two years at North Hardin High School, Radcliff, Kentucky; one year at Bluegrass Middle School, Elizabethtown; and currently I am in my second year at Caverna High School/Middle School, Horse Cave, Kentucky, where I teach Technology Education.
CO2 racing experience: I have been teaching CO2 racing for more than 15 years. I include it as a project in my woodworking class. My middle school students build dragsters as part of the transportation unit. At Bluegrass Middle School I had almost every student in the school. We built more than 700 dragsters that year. I really enjoy seeing the students’ enthusiasm during class and on race day.
Future of CO2 racing: CO2 racing will continue to grow in popularity because of the students’ interest and enthusiasm. I help run our state TSA competition, and each year it has the most participation of all the competitions. I encourage my students to try to beat the one-second mark.
Results in competition: This past year my students participated in TSA regional, state, and national competitions. At the high school level they placed first and third at regional, first at state, and 18th at national. My middle school students placed first and second at regional, first and second at state, and 24th at national. The national competition had more than 100 high school entries and 150 middle school entries.
